لقد وعد الله تعالى بحفظ كتابه الكريم، وكان من تمام هذا الحفظ أن حفظ سنة نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم من التغيير والتبديل فهيأ لها من يقوم على حفظ أسانيدها ومتونها من التغيير والتبديل والتحريف والإختلاط، حتى ميز العلماء صحيحها من سقيمها، وأصيلها من دخيلها، وكان من تمام هذا الحفظ أن حفظ سنة نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم من التغيير والتبديل فهيأ لها من يقوم على حفظ أسانيدها ومتونها من التغيير والتبديل والتحريف والإختلاط، حتى ميز العلماء صحيحها من سقيمها، وأصيلها من دخيلها، وكان من تمام هذا الحفظ لسنة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أن هيأ الله تعالى لها كذلك جهابذة اللغة الذين وقفوا على غريب ألفاظها، وعملوا على تجلية معانيها وبيانها وبيان مواضعها في لغة العرب بحيث لا تحرف عن معانيها ومواضعها ومقاصدها التي أرادها الشارع لها.
ومن هؤلاء الجهابذة الذين عنوا بهذا الباب ذلك العالم الفذ الجليل الحافظ ابن الأثير الجزري، وقد ذكر المحقق ترجمة وافية له في صدر هذا الكتاب "النهاية في غريب الحديث والأثر" تبين للقارئ من خلالها مدى سعة علم هذا الرجل ورسوخ قدمه في علوم العربية.
وقد تمثل عمل المحقق لهذا السفر الجليل بتخريج شواهده الحديثية، وبيان درجة كثير من نصوصه، لا سيما أنه يشتمل على قدر كبير من الضعيف والموضوع الذي هو مظنة الغريب في الغالب، وإن كان بالكتاب قدر كبير لا بأس به من الأحاديث الصحيحة المروية في الكتب الصحاح.
