يخلص السامع إلى ما خلص إليه الأصبهاني في كتابه هذا عن أخبار مجنون بني عامر، من أن خبر مجنون بني عامر وضعه الرواة، وهو، أي الأصمعي، مفهم، وينبغي مع إقرار الأصمعي، أن ينقطع شك الشاكين وريبة المرتابين فالواضع نفسه يقر بفعله وصنعه. غير أن الأصمعي، وهو القائل بالوضع والاختراع، لم يتورع في خبر آخر، سبق خبره المقرّ فيه بوضع الرواة أخبار المجنون، عن تخفيف صفة الجنون عن قيس ليلى، وعن الذهاب إلى أنه لم يكن مجنوناً حقاً، واقتصر الأمر على أنه كانت به "لوثة"، فأي الخبرين يصدق القارئ وأيهما يكذب؟ وأين يصدق الأصمعي نفسه وفي أي خبرية؟ هل اللوثة من الأخبار الموضوعة أم أنها ثمرة التصحيح والتحقيق؟ لا يسأل مؤلف هذا الكتاب هذه الأسئلة ولا يرد الجواب على سائلها. غير أنه ينسب إلى ابن الكلبي قول الأصمعي ويؤرخه ويوقته. وتتدرج الرواية في صدد نشأة الخبر عن المجنون على النحو التالي: الخبر والشعر موضوعان، وضعهما أموي مروائي هوي امرأة من قومه، فاستعار اسمي قيس وليلى وأخبارهما للكناية عن عشقه إلا مرأة التي أحصنها زواجها ومنعها من حبيبها أو من غزله بها وتشبيبه، ثم وقعت الأشعار والأخبار إلى العامة فأضافت ما قيل في ليلى إلى المجنون وألفت الأخبار المناسبة وتناقلتها وتراوتها. حتى إذا آل الأمر إلى الأصبهاني، في منتصف القرن الرابع للهجرة لم يسع المصنف إلا إلى ذكر "جمل مستحسنة" من أخبار المجنون متبرئاً من العهدة فيها. وعلّة التبرؤ أن أكثر أشعار المجنون المذكورة في أخباره ينسبها بعض الرواة إلى غيره. وتقديم هذه الشريطة يبرئ المؤلف بين الأخبار من "عيب طاعن وتتبع للعيوب". ضمن هذه الرؤية تأتي قراءة وضاح شرارة لكتاب أبي الفرج الأصبهاني "أخبار مجنون بني عامر". وهي تحمل في مضمونها سمان نقدية معاصرة لما ورد عند الأصبهاني من أخبار وأشعار تضعها في إطار قراءة معاصرة تقبل السلب والإيجاب.
