يشكل كتاب (الإمام علي بن أبي طالب.. روح الإسلام الخالد) قراءة جديدة في شخصية الإمام علي رضي الله عنه، وفيها يقدم الدكتور "حسن عيسى الحكيم" تعريفاً لشخصية الإمام علي من خلال علاقتها بالرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم) والقرآن. ومن خلال علمها وفضلها بين المسلمين، فكانت هذه الصفحات الجميلة في بيانها وأسلوبها وعرضها محاولة جديدة في قراءة هذه الشخصية العظيمة.
عن عمل هذا يقول الدكتور الحكيم: "استهدفت هذه الدراسة التي بعنوان: "الإمام علي بن أبي طالب روح الإسلام الخالد" تسليط الضوء على أعظم شخصية إسلامية وإنسانية في التاريخ، بعد شخصية الرسول الأعظم محمد بن عبد الله عليه افضل الصلاة والسلام، وقد امتازت شخصية الإمام علي (رضي الله عنه) بخصائص منفردة، وسمات سواء كانت منتزعة من مفردات شخصية، أو من أحداث عصره، وهي في مجموعها تعد خطيرة في التاريخ الإسلامي بما أفرزته من حوادث فرضت وجودها على المجتمع من بعده، وقد أحدث بعضها فجوة بين فصائل المجتمع من جهة، وبين الحاكمين من جهة اخرى، وقد استعانت هذه الدراسة بعدد كبير من المصادر الأولية والأساسية وذلك للوقوف على أقدم النصوص ومحاكمتها من حيث الصَحة أو الضعف أو الإختلاف (...) في محاولة لإزالة الغموض الذي أحاط ببعض المصادر والمراجع التي تناولت شخصية الإمام علي...".
هذا الكتاب دراسة مهتمة في شخصية الإمام علي رضي الله عنه تقف على الحقائق، وتغني الأذهان بما يدور عن هذه الشخصية من تساؤلات بموضوعية اعتمدت النصوص التاريخية القديمة، بنفس القدر الذي خصصته للآراء الحديثة مع المناقشة والتحليل والتفسير...
