في التاسع عشر من شهر آذار/مارس 1962 أدى التوقيع على اتفاقيات إفيان إلى وضع حد لثمان سنوات من الحرب في الجزائر. ومن أجل بلوغ هذه النتيجة كان من الواجب إجراء اتصالات سرية خلال بضع سنوات، ومواعيد لم تتم وشهور من المحادثات المتقطعة أو المؤجلة أو المستأنفة وذلك بينما كانت المعارك متواصلة. ورضا مالك الذي كان الناطق الرسمي لوفد جبهة التحرير الوطني (Fln) في إفيان، يروي الجانب المجهول من هذه المقابلات ويرسم المراحل المتعاقبة للمفاوضات ويستعيد أجواءها وما جرى في الكواليس خلال هذه المجابهة الطويلة جداً.
ومن أجل وضع هذا الكتاب المرجعي اعتمد رضا مالك على ذكرياته وجمع شهادات الذين عاشوا هذه المرحلة سواء أكانوا فرنسيين أم جزائريين واستخدام وثائقه الشخصية ووثائق غيره من المفاوضين الآخرين. ثم إنه رجع إلى الوثائق الجزائرية. وهذا الاستعراض الكامل الجذّاب الخالي من أي تحيز يمثل مساهمة بالغة الأهمية في دراسة التاريخ.
