يعتبر هذا الكتاب أول مؤلف يؤرخ للفن التشكيلي في سورية عبر العصور القديمة والوسيطة والحديثة فقد استعرض عبر أجزائه الثلاثة أبرز الإنجازات التصويرية والنحتية التي ابتدعها الإنسان السوري منذ العصور الحجرية المتأخرة وحتى نهاية القرن العشرين. يعرض الجزء الأول الفنون السورية في العصور (الآرامية والهيلينستية والرومانية والبيزنطية والإسلامية والعثمانية) من خلال التصوير الجداري والنحت الحجري والجصي والبرونزي بالإضافة الى فن حفر الأختام والرقم والفسيفساء واللوحات الصدفية والعاجية, متحدثاً عن فنون الزخرفة الإسلامية وتصوير المخطوطات والفن اليقوني والتصوير الشعبي وفنون الخط العربي. وعرض الجزء الثاني بدايات الحركة التشكيلية السورية المعاصرة منذ مطلع القرن العشرين وحتى منتصفه, مبيناً أبرز التجارب الرائدة, وتلك التجارب التي تلمست دروب الحداثة, ووضعت أسس النهضة الفنية في البلاد, وقد تضمن هذا الجزء معجماً لأبرز الرواد وإنجازاتهم الإبداعية. ويظهر الجزء الثالث أهم الاتجاهات الفنية التقليدية والحديثة التي سادت الثلث الأخير من القرن العشرين, ويتضمن معجماً لأبرز الفنانين الذين ساهموا في تطوير الفن التشكيلي السوري وهو بذلك يعتبر مرجعاً لكل المثقفين والراغبين في دراسة الفن السوري ومتابعة إنجازاته.
