يجمع هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه ملامح من عبقرية الإمام علي (رضي الله عنه) جاءت بقلم الدكتور "مهدي محبوبة" التي اعتبرها ثورة في الحياة وفي العلم والأدب. فالإمام علي (رضي الله عنه) كما يقول المؤلف: رب الفصاحة والبلاغة وأول من سن سنتها ووضع منهجها عند العرب (...) أرادها سبباً لإرساء المعرفة وإيصال الحكمة وتوضيح الشريعة وتثبيت الحق وإزهاق الباصل...".
وفي هذا السياق يستعرض الكتاب: حث الإمام علي (رضي الله عنه) على طلب العلم من خلال حكمياته رضي الله عنه وفرائد كلماته في تكامل الروح والجسد، والنفس، مع ملامح من فلسفته، وحكمه، وخصوصاً ما قاله الإمام في القوى الكلية الخمسة والتي يعرفها المؤلف على أنها: مجردات شاملة تنبعث في الإنسان حيث هو في أي وطن وبأي مكان... ذاتية التكوين، طبيعية الوجود، توحي للإنسان بعجزه وتنبئ، بأنه مخلوق لا خالق لأن الإنسان مجبول على بقائه دون فنائه، وعلى عزَة دون ذله، وعلى غناه دون فقره، وعلى عجزه دون صبره، وعلى نعيمه دون شقاه" وأولى تلك القوى كما يذكرها الإمام: البقاء في الغناء إذ يقول: "نفس المرء خطاه إلى قبره" ومنها قوله: العز في الذل، والفقر في الغنى، والصبر في البلاء، والنعيم في الشقاء، أيضاً يستعرض الكتاب نظرة الإمام إلى الحق، ونظرة الإمام في علم النفس، ونظرته إلى القضاء والقدر. يلي ذلك بعض الشواهد على معرفته (رضي الله عنه) في علم الفلك، ووصاياه الطبية وغيرها. أيضاً يتطرق الكتاب إلى خاصية "الإيمان عند الإمام علي (رضي الله عنه) وفكره العقائدي، وأخيراً دوره في المعارك في عهد النبوة ومحاربته المشركين...
