إن التحدي الرئيس للنظم التعليمية المعاصرة لا يتمثل في تقديم التعليم الجيد فقط، بل يتعداه إلى دراسة نوعية حياة الطلبة التي تتأثر سلباً أو إيجاباً بمستويات جودة حياتهم، وفي ضوء ذلك فإن تحسين بيئة الطلبة الاجتماعية والنفسية قد أصبح جزءاً من تحسين السياسات التعليمية؛ لذا أخذت الدراسات والبحوث في تناول القضايا والمعوقات التي تواجه الطلبة عبر مراحل حياتهم الدراسية، لتدبير تحسين وتطوير البيئة الجامعية التي تتطلب تحسين مستويات جودة حياتهم، والتي تعني (هو شعور الفرد بالرضا والسعادة والقدرة على إشباع حاجاته من خلال ثراء البيئة ورقي الخدمات التي تقدم له في المجالات الصحية والاجتماعية والتعليمية والنفسية مع حسن إدارته للوقت والاستفادة منه).
وتتمثل أهمية هذا البحث في تناوله موضوع جودة الحياة وعلاقتها بكل من الانتماء الاجتماعي الذي يعني (نزعة تدفع الفرد للدخول في إطار اجتماعي معين، والالتزام بمعاييره، ونصرته بما ينمي لديه تقديراً لذاته وإدراكه لمكانته ومكانة جماعته، ويدفعه للعمل ويشعره بفخر الانتساب إليها)، والقبول الاجتماعي الذي يعني (حالة من الألفة والمحبة والانسجام والتناغم النفسي والاجتماعي التي يُعبر عنها أفراد الجماعة تجاه أحدهم وتحقق له الرضا والسعادة)، ذلك أن مجالات العلاقات الاجتماعية للطلبة تتمثل في العلاقات الداخلية الأسرية والقرابية، فضلاً عن العلاقات الخارجية مع أقرانه وأعضاء الهيئة التدريسية من جهة وتعليمه في الجامعة وكيفية قضاء أوقات فراغه والحفاظ على صحته العامة وصحته النفسية وتفاؤله الاجتماعي ومسايرته من جهة أخرى، وأن مخرجات هذه العلاقات تتحدد بقبول الطلبة لوجهة نظر الآخرين لهم وتقبلهم هم للآخرين.
