تحتوي الموسوعة على جانبين مهمين أساسيين من جوانب الدراسة البحتة وهما:
الجانب الأول: الدراسة العلمية التي تبحث عن ذكر الخواص العلمية للحيوان وطبائعه وتوالده ومعيشته في الطبيعة.
أما الجانب الثاني: فهو الجانب الأدبي فهو لم يترك حيواناً من الحيوانات إلا ذكر ما قيل فيه من وصف له أو لطريقة صيده أو طرده وما قاله الشعراء والأدباء فيه وإن بعض أوصاف الحيوانات التي وردت في هذه الموسوعة تعد من الأصواف الفريدة التي لم ترد في غيرها.
والمؤلف ركز في دراسته في علم الوراثة وهي التي جعلته يطلع على كتب لم يطلع عليها غيره، فلخص منها ما يروقه ويتحبب إليه وهو جدير بها.
لذا نجد أن الموسوعة أصبحت المصدر المهم للكتب التي جاءت بعده فلقد أخذ منها النويري صاحب كتاب (نهاية الأرب) كذلك أخذ منها الدميري عند تأليفه كتاب (الحيوان) وهنا تكمن أهمية هذه الموسوعة، فهي تعتبر أساساً متيناً لهذه الكتب التي اعترف وأقرّ بها أصحاب صراحة وبإشارات واضحة إلى الاقتباس منها والاعتماد عليها في تأليف كتبهم.
