الكواكب السائدة للشيخ نجم الدين الغزي رتبه على حروف المعجم وأورد فيه تراجم أعيان القرن العاشر من العلماء والأعلام في دمشق وحلب وغيرها من مدن بلاد الشام والقاهرة والحرمين الشريفين كما أضاف إليها نبذة من تراجم أعيان الدولة العثمانية ووفياتهم.
وقد تتبع كل ذلك بعرض بالغ على الأمانة والدقة فيما نقله أو رواه عنهم. وكان منهجه في ذلك وسطاً بين الإيجاز والإطناب كما التزم ترتيباً يبدأ فيه بذكر اسم المترجم واسم أبيه وبعض أجداده على ترتيب الحروف ولم يهمل ذكر تاريخ الميلاد وتاريخ الوفاة. وقد وضع أسماء المحمديين ف أول كل طبقة وبدءاً بعدهم بالإعلام التي أولها حرف ألف وانتهى بالياء.
ويقع الكتاب في مجلدين وقد عكف السيد خليل المنصور على وضع الحواشي على المتن حيث وجد ذلك مناسباً وتجنب الإطالة والإسراف كما عرف ببعض الأماكن والمفردات الغربية تسهيلاً على الباحث والدارس.
كتاب يبحث في علم التراجم متخصص في الترجمة لأعيان القرن العاشر الهجري من سنة 901هجري إلى سنة 1000 هجري، وقد رتبه ترتيبا ألفبائيا ما عدا من اسمهم محمد فهو يذكرهم في أول كل طبقة ثم يبدأ بذكر الباقين على الترتيب الألفبائي.
