لعبت الصحافة في بداية النهضة الفكرية في البلدان الإسلامية دوراً مهمّاً في بثّ الوعي ونشر الثقافة، ولم تكن مدينة النجف الأشرف - السبّاقة في ميادين العلم والمعرفة - بمعزل عن هذا المولود الجديد، حيث ظهرت فيها عشرات الصحف والمجلات الثقافية والأدبية والإجتماعية والسياسية، وكانت سمتها الغالبة مواكبة الأحداث العالمية أدباً وسياسةً وثقافةً، فصحافة النجف الأشرف كانت مرآة صافية للنشاط الفكري والثقافي والإجتماعي الذي دار في مختلف أنديتها آنذاك.
وإحياءً للتراث القيّم الزاخر بالمعلومات المهمّة الكثيرة، وحفاظاً عليه من الضياع، جاء العدد السادس من (سلسلة صحافة النجف الأشرف) وهي مجلة الشعاع لصاحبها عبد الهادي العصامي، صدر عددها الأول من السنة الأولى في 15 رجب 1367هــ وانتهت في 15 رجب 1368هــ.
أما السنة الثانية فابتدأت بالعدد الأول في 18 شوال 1368 هــ ولم يتم العثور إلا على الأعداد الخمسة الأولى والعدد السابع فقط الذي صدر بحجم جريدة.
وقد افتتح الأستاذ عبد الهادي العصامي مجلته باسم مبدع الشعاع، وباسم منقذ الإنسانية الأعظم رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) ومستصحباً بإشعاع الحق وأنوار الواقع، وذلك بعدما ساد الجهل بالتعاليم الإسلامية السامية، ممّا أدى إلى حجب الشعاع المستمد من شريعة القرآن الذي أنار القلوب، وعليه جاءت مجلة الشعاع لتكون نوراً انبثق في سماء الوجود، لتنقذ الإنسانية المعذّبة تحت أغلال المادة وقيود الطبيعة المصنوعة حلقاتها من الأهواء والشهوات.
