The aim of this first work is to introduce the very young child to the exciting world of words. Long before attaining school age, the small child loves to be shown pictures and to be told the names of the objects depicted. Why not then make use of this lively interest to introduce the child at an early age to a wide range of the things which go to make up his environment? The present book was conceived as an answer to that challenge.
It comprises nine pictorial, each composed of four pictures representing the letters of the alphabet: A is represented by an aeroplane, for instance, B, by a balloon, ...Z, by a Zebra. The last two displays are devoted to teaching the child the sounds which result from the conjunction of two letters ('ai', 'ea', 'ou'...).
The words selected fall into two categories: first, words for concerte things: animals (gazelle, bear, lion, zebra, elephant), plants (iris, rose, tulip), or everyday objects (chair, dice, boat, truck, harp, locomotive); second, words generally considered as forming part of the basic vocabulary which should be acquired by the child before beginning school.
This is not just a picture-book; it is also an educational aid, for it will enable the child to recognize the sound and written form of each letter of the alphabet, as well as the illustration representing it. It is recommended that the method followed in using the work should be one of constant repetition: when the sound of a letter is repeated for the child, he will come to associate the picture with that sound automatically, and gradually become familiar with the order of that sound in the alphabet as a whole. The displays may be used to decorate the walls of the child's room, and in this way both amuse and instruct him.
For you, the parents, this book will be a valuable guide. It will provide you with a field of interaction with your children, by providing basic material (illustrations) on which you can elaborate as you see fit. By teaching your child the material contained in this book before he begins his school life, you will be greatly assisting him, as well as facilitating the task of his teachers!
