الكتب الرجالية التي تناولت تراجم الرواة والمحدثين والعلماء الكثيرة جدا لا يمكننا سرد أسمائها في هذه العجالة. ولكن أهم الكتب في هذا الموضوع من مؤلفات المتقدمين هي أربعة كتب عليها المعول وهي الأصول الأربعة في هذا الباب، وهي:
1- (معرفة الناقلين عن الأئمة الصادقين) لأبي عمرو محمد بنت عمر بن عبد العزيز الكشي الذي يعرف بـ(رجال الكشي).
2- (كتاب الرجال) لأبي العباس أحمد بن علي بن أحمد بن العباس النجاشي المتوفي سنة 405ه المعروف بـ ((رجال النجاشي).
3- (كتاب الرجال) لشيخ الطائفة أبي جعفر محمد بن الحسن بن علي بن الحسن الطوسي المتوفي سنة 460ه المعروف بـ (رجال الطوسي).
4- كتاب الفهرست للشيخ الطوسي أيضا.
وأقدم هذه الكتب الأربعة هو رجال الكشي، وهو مؤلف على ترتيب الطبقات يبدأ بأصحاب أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام) وينتهي بذكر أصحاب أبي محمد الحسن العسكري (عليه السلام)، وربما يكرر ذكر الرجل إذا كان يعد من أصحاب إمامين أو ثلاثة أو أكثر، كما أنه يلتزم بذكر ما جاء في كل شخص مع الأسانيد عن شيوخه حتى تصل إلى الإمام أو الناقل الأول للموضوع، وقد يذكر حديثا واحدا مكررا في مكانين من الكتاب أو أكثر باتفاق السند أو اختلافه.
