كان الفلاسفة القدماء يميلون إلى تفسير العالم بالعلية الغائية (أرسطو)، أو بالعلة الأخلاقية أو الخير (أفلاطون). أما المحدثون، فإنهم يفسرون العالم تفسيراً ميكانيكياً آلياً. ولعل (ليبنتس) كان يعتقد، أن التفسير الآلي، هو أقرب إلى الحقيقة من التفسير الميتافيزيقي للعالم. لذلك أقبل على دراسة الرياضيات، وسافر إلى يينا، وتتلمذ على (فيجل) الذي كان أستاذاً للرياضة والميكانيكا والفلك، كما كان ليبنتس يميل إلى التوفيق بين أرسطو، والفلسفة الحديثة. ويبدو أن (ليبنتس)، لم يجد عند (فيجل) ما يبغيه حقاً من العلوم الرياضية، فعاد إلى ليبزج ودرس القانون، وأدرك منذ ذلك الوقت أهمية اللغة الألمانية، وأنها أكثر شفافية من اللغات الأخرى، ومع ذلك كان (ليبنتس) يكتب بالفرنسية، لأنه لم يجد في ألمانيا جمهوراً كافياً.
من هذا المنطلق كان لا بد من إبداء اهتمام خاص بفيلسوفنا هذا، فجاءت هذه الدراسة التي تستعرض فلسفة (ليبنتس) الذي جمع بين فلسفة القدماء والمحدثين، والذي اكتشف أن القدماء يسلمون بحقيقة الجواهر والصور، بينما الحدثيون، يرفضون هذه المبادئ. لقد بحث هذا الفيلسوف في علوم شتى، وكتب في علوم متعددة، وترك تراثاً أدبياً في الرياضيات والدين والسياسة، هذا التراث ما زال مدار بحث ودراسة إلى يومنا هذا.
