يحاول كتاب "آدم والتاريخ" أن يغطّي نقصاً كبيراً في الدراسات الأكاديميّة الخاصّة بالتراث الإسلامي، إذ لم يتّجه إلى دراسة المتخيّل في الثقافة الإسلامية؛ بل ركّز على المتخيّل خصوصاً، ولم يكتفِ بدراسة خطابه وبيان مميزاته العامّة بل سعى إلى رسم تاريخ نشأته وتطوّره وصولاً إلى القرن الثاني عشر الهجري الثّامن عشر الميلادي، ولم يعمل على تحليل بعض الأخبار التي تؤثّثه بل عمل على تفكيك مياثمه وتدقيق دلالات رموزه، والكشف عن بناه السطحيّة والعميقة.
فكان أن قارب موضوعه بقراءتين الأولى تاريخيّة محّص من خلالها إشكاليّة التاريخ والذّاكرة كما تحضر عند بول ريكور، والثّانية سيميائيّة ناقش فيها بطريقة صامتة مقاربة جيلبير دوران للبنى الأنثروبولوجيّة للمتخيّل.
وقد تمكّن من تحقيق هذه الغايات حينما اعتنى بحكاية خلق الإنسان الأوّل في المدوّنة السنّيّة والمدوّنة الشيعيّة بالنظر في كتب التاريخ العام والتفسير وقصص الأنبياء؛ وقد تبيّن الفرق الكبير بين الخطاب السنّي والإمامي من جهة والخطاب الإسماعيلي من جهة أخرى، وقارب الفروق بين ما جاء في هذه الكتب من مشرب إسرائيليّ وما جاء من مشرب فارسي وهندي، أو ما بدا "أصليّاً" في الثّقافة الإسلاميّة.
إنّه مدخل ضروريّ لمعرفة عالم المتخيّل الديني الإسلامي وبناه الأنثروبولوجيّة، وهي معرفة تقرّبنا أكثر من رؤية للتراث الإسلامي تبصر بدقّة علاقاته بأنواع التراث الإنساني الذي كان يتحرّك داخله، وتدرك بعمق نسبيّة تصوّراته وتاريخيّتها.
