مضى وقت كان الكلام فيه عن فلسفة وسيطية يبدو تحدياً للحسن السلم. فقد كان من المقبول عموماً أنه فيما بين نهاية الفسلفة القديمة وديكارت لم يكن هناك شيء، وذلك كما ولو أن العصور التي أنتجت الكاتدرالية والأنشودة البطولية، ناهيك عن كثرة من الإبداعات الأخرى-كانت، على صعيد الفكر الفلسفي، من أتم ما يكون عقماً، لكن المنظورات قد تغيرت تماماً. فقد أصبح معلوماً، اليوم، أن إشعاع النهضة لا يمكن أن يفسر بدون ذلك النضج الوسيطي البطيء، وأن الديكارتية تغرس جذورها في الاسكولائية، وأكثر من ذلك، فإن الفلسفة الوسيطية ليس لها الفضل فقط أنها تزيد في فهم الفلسفة الحديثة، بل أن لها فائدتها الخاصة في حيث أنها تمثل جهداً فكرياً أصيلاً.
وإذا كانت معرفة الفلسفات القديمة هي طريق للولوج إلى الفلسفة إطلاقاً، فإن معرفة الفلسفات الوسيطية تستطيع، ويجب عليها أن تقدم بالدور عينه لذا كان مطمع المترجم أن لا تجلب هذه الخطاطة الموجزة للقارئ خلاصته تاريخ فقط، بل أن توقظ فيه رغبة التفلسف ومذاقه، والتاريخ عن الفلسفة الوسيطية في هذا الكتاب يبدأ من القرن التاسع لينتهي مع فجر القرن الخامس عشر. وستحدد بالعالم الغربي، المسيحي واللاتيني، أن المظهر الشامل للمجال الذي يريد المترجم استكشافه يبدد أمام أعين المؤرخين الحديثين ذا تضاريس حادة تبرز من بينها ثلاث قمم كبرى هي نهضة القرن التاسع، ونهضة القرن الثاني عشر، ثم نهضة القرن الخامس عشر، ويبدأ التاريخ عن الفلسفة الوسيطية مع أولى تلك النهضات، ويتوقف عند عتبة الثالثة.
