يقول محقق الرسائل يوسع فنكل: هذه مجموعة قيمة، تشمل ثلاث رسائل لأبي عثمان عمرو بن بحر الجاحظ لم تنشر بعد الأولى رسالته في الرد على النصارى، والثانية، رسالته في أخلاق الكتاب، والثالثة، رسالته في الفيان.
وقد عثرنا على أصولها الخطية فأردنا أن نقوم بنشرها، لما اشتملت عليه من الفوائد المهمة التاريخية والأدبي، وهي من ضمن مجموعة من رسائل الجاحظ اختارها عبيد الله بن حسان.
الجاحظ يفتح الجيم والحاء المكسورة بينهما الألف وفي أخره الطاء المعجمة، هذا لقب أبي عثمان عمرو بن بحر الجاحظ البصري، إنّما قيل له ذلك لأنَّ عينيه جاحظتان، الجاحظية يفتح الجيم وبعدها الأنف وكسر الحاء المهملة وفي آخره الطاء المعجمة.
هذه النسبة إلى فرقة من المعتزلة وهم أصحاب أبي عثمان عمرو بن بحر بن محبوب الجاحظ البصري، صاحب التصانيف الحسنة، وكان من أهل البصرة، واحد شيوخ المعتزلة.
ووصف الجاحظ اللسان فقال: "هو أداة يظهر بها البيان، وشاهد يعبّر عن الضمير، وحاكم يفصل الخطاب، وناطق يردّ به الجواب، وشافع تدرك به الحاجة، وواصف تعرف به الأشياء، وواعظ ينهى عن القبيح، ومعزّ يرد الأحزان، ومعتذرُ يرفع الضغينة، وما يونق الأسماع، وزارع بحرث المودة، وحاصد يستأصل العداوة، وشاكر يستوجب المزيد، ومادح يستحق الألفة، ومؤنس يذهب الوحشة.
وقال المبرد: دخلت على الجاحظ في آخر أيامه وهو عليل، فقلت له كيف أنت؟ فقال: كيف من نصفه مثلوج ولو نشر بالمناشير ما أحس به، ونصفه الآخر منقرس لو طار الذباب بقربه لألمه، والآفة في جميع هذا أني قد جزت التسعين، ثم أنشدنا: "أترجو أن تكون وأنت شيخ... كما قد كنت أيام الشباب"... "لقد كذبتك نفسك ليس ثوب... دريس كالجديد من الثياب".
