تشكل أوجاع العضلة الليفية مرضاً مزمناً غير خطر لكنه قد يغدو مقعداً ويتميز بأوجاع وترية-عضلية متفشية، وبتعب مزمن واضطرابات في النوم واكتئاب، واضطرابات هضمية إلى جانب أعراض أخرى متنوعة.
غدا مرض أوجاع العضلة الليفية شائعاً أكثر، وليس له سبب واضح ويبدو منشأة كأنه ذو عوامل متعددة، بيد أن حادث إطلاقه، غالباً ما يكون ناشئاً عن إصابة جسدية أو نفسية.
لطالما تعرض المصابون بهذه الأوجاع لعدم الفهم ولم يحملوا على محمل الجد، لأن أية أعراض خارجية لم تشر إلى أوجاعهم، وأي فحص بيولوجي لم يستطع تأكيدها بصورة موضوعية. وقد أثبتت دراسات جدية أجريت حديثاً تحت ضغط مجموعات المرضى واقع هذا المرض النسائي بوجه الخصوص.
