يعدّ هذا الكتاب واحداً من الكتب التاريخية المفقودة التي تكشف عن بطون التاريخ الإسلامي، جمعه المؤرخ "أبي سعد الصدفي المصري" من بقايا المصنفات التاريخية، ورتب مادته على حروف الهجاء وقسمه إلى أبواب رئيسية بدأها بـ(باب الهجرة).
وقد قسّم كتابه هذا إلى جزئين عالج في الجزء الأول، "تاريخ المصريين" من الفتح الإسلامي لمصر (سنة 20هـ إلى سنة وفاة ابن يونس 347هـ)، فسجل فيه ترجمة لكل من يمكن أن يطلق عليه لقب "مصري" مما وقعت مادته تحت يده، وجعل على رأس هؤلاء جميعاً الصحابة الذين دخلوا مصر مع الفتح الإسلامي لها، أو بعده كما أدخل فيه من أدركوا زمن الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم ولم يلتقوا به، وقدموا إلى مصر مع الفتح أو بعده بقليل، وكذلك من ولد بمصر وعاش بها، وكذلك من دخل صغيراً أو أقام ثم استقر بها ومات، أو خرج بعد فترة إلى غيرها من البلاد وبذلك تحدد الفترة الزمنية لتراجم هذا الكتاب حتى وفاة ابن يونس 347هـ.
أما الجزء الثاني: فقد رصد فيه تراجم علماء الأقاليم الأخرى الإسلامية: مثل أفريقية، المغرب، الأندلس، الشام، العراق، بلاد المشرق الإسلامي إلى آخر هذه البلدان والهدف من إصدار هذا الكتاب هو إثبات أن مصر لا تزال تتمتع حتى أواسط القرن الرابع الهجري بمكانة علمية متميزة، بحيث صارت موئلاً للحركة الثقافية، ولا يزال علماء الأقاليم الأخرى يوفدون إلى أرضها.
