"بلادي أين من يصبو إليك عند ذكراك؟ ومن يسمو به الحب إلى تقديس فغناك؟ ومن أن مسّك الكرب وناديتيه لباك؟ ومن يركض أو يحبو إذا ما المجد ناداك؟ سلي من شئت فالشعب غفول عنك لا يدري بلادي لم أجد فيك هتوفاً باسمك البائس، سوى الكاتب يبكيك بروع هامد يائس أو الشاعر يرثيك بقلب ذابل ناعس ولم أنظر بواديك سوى منظرك العابس، سوى ماضيك لا يخبو شعاع منه كالفجر، بلادي في دمي أنت هوىً ينساب دفقا وفي الأحشاء قد عشت فؤاداً عاش خفاقاً فمن كينونتي كنت غراساً طين أعراقاً، وفي قلبي مازلت له الداء الذي ذاقا ففيما عجز الطب سيلقي فوق ما لاقى، بلادي والمنى تجري مع الأقدار والدهر بما نجهل أو تدري في الخير أو الشر أنرجو في مدى العمر لك التحليق كالنسر، فأفق المجد والفخر وكون خالد الذكر؟ لقد عشنا وما نصبو لغير علاك في القدر؟.
