صاحب هذا المصنف هو الشيخ العلامة عبد القادر بن محمد بدران "الملقب بابن بدران، وهو فقيه أصولي حنبلي، عارف بالأدب والتاريخ. كان سلفي العقيدة، أصولي كبير، متبحر بعلم النحو، ذو نزعة فلسفية، حسن المحاضر، وله مصنفات كثيرة منها هذا الذي نقلب صفحاته والذي يتحدث فيه عن مذهب الإمام أحمد بن حنبل. مضمناً إياه جل ما يحتاج إلا معرفته المشتغل بهذا المذهب وسلك به مسلكاً غيره حتى صار يستحق أن يكون مدخلاً لسائر المذاهب.
رتب المصنف مدخله هذا على ثمانية عقود جاءت موضوعاتها كما يلي: العقد الأول: في العقائد التي نقلت عن الإمام المبجل احمد بن حنبل، العقد الثاني: في السبب الذي لأجله اختار كثير من العلماء مذهب الإمام احمد غير غيره. العقد الثالث: في ذكر أصول مذهبه في استنباط الفروع، وبيان طريقته، العقد الرابع: في مسلك كبار أصحابه في ترتيب مذهبه واستنباط من فتياه والروايات عنه وتصرفهم في ذلك الإرث المحمدي الأحمدي، العقد الخامس: في الأصول الفقهية التي دونها الأصحاب وفي فن الجدل، العقد السادس: فيما اصطلح عليه المؤلفون في فقه الإمام احمد، مما يحتاج إليه المبتدئ. العقد السابع: في ذكر الكتب المشهورة في المذهب وبيان طريقة بعضها وما عليه من التعليقات، والحواشي حسب الإمكان، العقد الثامن: في أقسام الفقه عند أصحابنا وما ألف في هذا النوع وهذه طلائع تلك العقود وما أودع فيها من الفقر والدرر.
