يعد كتاب الفروع للشيخ "أبي عبد الله" محمد بن مفلح من أعظم ما صنف في فقه الإمام أحمد بن حنبل نفعاً، وأكثرها جمعاً، وأتمها تحريراً، وأكملها تحقيقاً، وأقربها إلى الصواب طريقاً، وأقومها ترجيحاً، وأغزرها علماً، وأوسطها حجماً، وذلك لاجتهاد المصنف في تحريره وتصحيحه، وتهذيبه وتنقيحه، وتحرير نقوله، وتهذيب أصوله، وتصحيح المذاهب فيه، وهو كله ما جعل من الكتاب مادة يحتاج إليها كل طالب علم ومرجعاً يعول عليه كل دارس ومصنف في التصحيح والتحرير وفيه التزم المصنف بتقديم مذهب الإمام أحمد بن حنبل، ولكن أن اختلف الترجيح أطلق الخلاف ومن يتتبع الكتاب يجد أن ما قله المصنف صحيحاً وما التزمه صريحاً، إلا أنه قد يعثر له فيه على بعض مسائل، قدّم فيها حكماً نوقش على كونه المذهب، وكذلك يعثر فيه على بعض مسائل أطلق فيها الخلاص والمذهب فيها مشهور وما ذاك إلا لأنه لم يبيضه كله-ولم يقرأ عليه فحصل بسبب ذلك بعض خلل في بعض مسائله.
هذا الخلل في بعض مسائله هو الذي دعا "أبي الحسن علي بن سليمان المرداوي" إلى تصحيح مادته وذلك عبر تصحيحه للخلاف في المسائل، وكذلك إلى نقل ما تيسر له من كلام الأصحاب في كل مسألة منها وهي تزيد على ألفين ومائتين وعشرين مسئلة، كما ونبه على بعض المسائل التي فيها خلل: أما في العبارة، و الحكم، أو التقديم، أو الإطلاق، ولكن على سبيل التبعية، وهي تزيد على ستمائة وثلاثين تنبيهاً، ولما كان كتاب الفروع بالمنزلة التي ذكرناها وكان لا يستغن عنه كمرجع مهم في مسائل مذهب الإمام "أحمد حنبل، وأصوله، ونصوصه فقد عني بتحقيقه في هذه الطبعة التي بين أيدينا بعد الجمع بين نص "كتاب الفروع"، والنص "المصحح عليه". وبشكل عام جاءت مادة الكتاب موزعة على ستة أجزاء متعادلة في حجمها تقريباً، باب العبادات وزع على الأجزاء الثلاثة الأولى وهي: الجزء الأول: جاء في الطهارة، الجزء الثاني: في الإمامة، الجزء الثالث: في الصوم، أما باب المعاملات فوزع على الأجواء الباقية وهي: الجزء الرابع: البيع، الجزء الخامس: الفرائض، الجزء السادس: العريات.
