يحتل كتاب "عبد الله بن أبي شيبة" الكتاب المصنف مكانة بارزة بين الكتب المصنفة في الحديث، وذلك لأن مصنفه يعد من أوائل جامعي سنة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ذلك إلى جانب احتواء الكتاب لكم من الأحاديث والآثار، حديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأفعاله ,آثاره كلها وآثار أصحابه والتابعين رضي الله عنهم أجمعين.
وبالنظر لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد اهتم "محمد عبد السلام شاهين" بإصدار هذه الطبعة محققة حيث اعتنى أولاً: بعزو الآيات القرآنية، وذكر رقم السورة ورقم الآية. ثانياً،: قام بتشكيل أحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم القولية منها فقط، ثالثاً: وضع أرقام للكتب مسلسلة. رابعاً: وضع أرقاماً للأحاديث من أول الكتاب إلى آخره، خامساً: قام بشكل بعض الأسماء الواردة والمشكلة، سادساً: قام بإضافة بعض الحواشي هذا إلى جانب بعض الفهارس العلمية الشاملة.
من طرق التصنيف في الحديث " المصنفات " وفي هذا الفن كتابان عظيمان هما : مصنف عبد الرزاق، وكتابنا هذا والمصنفات تهتم بأحاديث الصحابة (الموقوفات) والتابعين (المقطوعات) التي يطلق عليها أحيانا الآثار وقد يرد فيه بعض أحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ورتبه بحسب المواضيع من فقه وعقيدة . بلغت الآثار فيه 37930أثرا والكتاب ذخيرة ومرجع لمن أراد البحث عن أقوال الصحابة والتابعين رضوان الله عليهم وقد زود بمجلدين للفهارس العلمية.
