كيف حققت أوروبا نهضتها؟ الإجابة تحتاج عودة تاريخية إلى فترة البدء حتى يتمكن القارئ من التقاط تلك اللحظة الزمنية التي ساهمت في كسر معادلة التوازن بين العالمين العربي والأوربي. يؤشر كتاب «نشوء النخبة الأوروبية.. 1400 - 1920» لمؤلفه الأستاذ وليد نويهض إلى تلك اللحظة التي بدأت في القرن الخامس عشر، وأخذت بالنمو والصعود الطردي بعد تغيير خطوط التجارة القديمة (طريق الحرير) وعبور السفن المحيطات، وصولاً إلى الدوران حول رأس الرجاء الصالح واكتشاف أميركا في نهاية ذلك القرن. بعدها أخذت أوروبا بالنهوض من خلال ما أسماه الكتاب "تعانق العمران مع المعرفة"، ما أدى إلى تشقق الكنيسة في القرن السادس عشر وظهور حالات من التمرد على القديم.
لم يأتِ انهيار القديم من فراغ وإنما جاء استجابة للتحولات العمرانية والاكتشافات والاختراعات العلمية والطبية والفيزيائية والكيميائية والفلكية والهندسية والرياضية وغيرها من إنجازات. خلال هذه الفترة برز دور "النخبة الأوربية" فأخذت تكتشف موقعها ووظيفتها، وبدأت تتدخل لصوغ منظومات معرفية تتخطى الفلسفات والمناهج الكلاسيكية المتوارثة والمترجمة عن العرب واليونان. وجاءت قوة "النخبة" من وراء اعتمادها على حاجة العمران وضغوطه ومتطلباته للاستكشاف بحثاً عن الحقيقة (العلة الأولى)، ما أعطى فرصة للتقدم المعرفي الذي أخذ يفرض حضوره في عالم يتغير على مختلف المستويات والقطاعات
