تصف الرواية يوماً طويلاً عاشته بطلتها مجهولة الإسم، وهي تتنقّل من منزلها إلى سوق واقف في وسط مدينة الدوحة، عابرةً شوارعَ ومناطقَ تنتزع منها أفكاراً وخواطرَ شتّى، وفيما هي تسترجع ذكرياتها قاطعةً الزمن ذهاباً وإياباً، تعمد الشخصيّة الساردة إلى رسم دواخل البطلة ومن حولها من شخوص، وأوّلهم زوجها الّذي يكتشف أنّه لا يمكنه العيش من دونها، فلا أحد له سواها.
البطلة عاشت ملحمةً طويلةً مكتوبة بتشكيلةٍ قديمة غير مفهومة، فلا نقاط، نقوشها مشفّرةً، ولا أحد يملك فكّ رموزها، وفوق هذا، فقد شعرت بأنّ موجات متتابعة تصدر أصواتاً متلاحقةً لا تستطيع إستقبالها أوصدّها، حلمها يبتعد، ثم يعود لتكسوه ملامح لطيفة وبعض الغبار، لكنّها تخشى في أوقاتٍ كثيرة أن تفقده، أو أن تسيء تفسيره، حينذاك ستقع كارثة ما لا محالة، كارثة تنذر بأفظع العواقب.
