تتضمن هذه الموسوعة مجمل ما تركه المرجع، وكان من المعروف أن السيّد بقي على نهجه في القراءة والكتابة حتى نهاية العمر، مواظباً على العطاء الفكري والإجتماعي والفقهي والسياسي، بشهادة من التقاهم، كان يصلح ذات البين في الساحات اللبنانية والعربية والإسلامية والعالمية، يتابع، ويقرأ، ويسمع، ويحلّل قبل إبداء الرأي والموقف.
إنتاجه الموسوعي الغزير لم يقتصر على المؤلفات التي كتبها بخط يده، أو جمعها عدد من المريدين والكتّاب المرموقين، بل تعدّى هذا الإطار الأساسي، وصولاً إلى خطب صلاة الجمعة، والمناسبات الدينية، ناهيك بالأحاديث الإعلامية في الصحف والمجلات والإذاعات والتلفاز، وبالندوات والمحاضرات المتعدّدة العناوين والمجالات، داخل لبنان وخارجه، هذا كله يشكّل مصادر غنيّة لمضامين الموسوعة.
وتعود أهمية الموسوعة إلى الفكر الموسوعي للسيّد، فهو من الأعلام الكبار في الفكر الإسلامي، والفقه الإسلامي، بعدما تجاوز نطاق الدراسات المذهبية إلى مجمل الدراسات الإسلامية، وغيرها من دراسات علمية في غير مجال.
كما ترتبط أهمية الموسوعة بمجمل التراث الذي تركه السيّد، أي أنها تتناول معظم ما يتصل بالفكر الإسلامي المعاصر، في باب العبادات، كما في باب المعاملات، لذلك، فإن التوثيق هذا التراث وشرحه، في إطار عقلاني بعيداً من الغرائز والعصبيات، يعطي للموسوعة أهميةً إضافية.
بالإضافة كذلك جاءت مادة البحث الموسوعي في مجمل كتابات السيّد ودراساته وتصريحاته وأقواله من مصادرها المختلفة، فضلاً عن العودة إليه في نقاط ومسائل قد تكون ملتبسة.
