وضع الشيخ ابن حجر كتاباً يبين فيه حقبة خلافة أبي بكر وعمر. وقد سماه الصواعق المحرقة. وقد رد عليه مؤلف هذا الكتاب "الصوارم المهرقة" ذاهباً إلى أن كتاب ابن حجر قد احتوى على سوء المكابرة والأحاديث الموضوعة والآثار المصنوعة والإيرادات الباردة والاعتراضات الجامدة.
كما يضعف المؤلف من شأن أحاديث كثيرة أوردها ابن حجر كحديث أصحابي كالنجوم، إذ يذكر المؤلف هنا أن ما وقع بين الصحابة من المحاربات والمشاجرات على الوجه المسطور في كتب التواريخ والمذكور على ألسنة الثقات يدل بظاهرة على أن بعضهم قد حاد عن طريق الحق وبلغ حد الظلم والفسق وكان الباعث عليه الحقد والعناد والحسد واللداد وطلب الملك والرياسات والميل إلى اللذات والشهوات، إذ ليس كل صحابي معصوماًَ ولا كل من لقي النبي بالخير موسوماً.
