"كتاب الصاحبي" هو كتاب في فقه اللغة، وقد سمّاه مؤلفه وهو أحمد بن فارس بالصاحبي نسبة إلى الصاحب بن عبّاد، وكان أبن فارس قدّم الكتاب إليه وأودعه خزانته. أما مضمون الكتاب فيدور حول اللغة العربية وأوليتها ومنشئها، ثم يبحث في أساليب العرب في تخاطبهم، وفي الحقيقة والمجاز.
وقد بدأ الكتاب بباب قرر فيه أن اللغة توقيف وليست اصطلاحاً، ثم ذهب في الأبواب التالية يدرس الظواهر اللغوية دراسة شبه فلسفية، فيبدأ بتفصيل العربية على ما سواها من اللغات، ويذهب بعد ذلك مفصلاً، مقارناً بين اللغات، مستشهداً بالقرآن الكريم وبالشعر العربي، وبصور من كلام العرب، وينتقل بعد ذلك إلى دراسة المفردات اللغوية من حيث معانيها المختلفة وطرق استعمالها، وائتلافها واختلافها، فيطرق بين الاسمى منها والحرفي، ويبحث في أصول الأسماء وما جرى مجراها من الصفات، كما يدرس الحروف المفردة من حيث المعاني ووجوه الاستعمال، والأفعال وأبنيتها إلى ما هنالك من أبواب أخرى.
وللكتاب قيمة من حيث أنه أضاف إلى مكتبتنا العربية مصدراً هاماً من المصادر اللغوية، لا يستغني عنه عام أو خاص. عالم أو متعلم، ومن هنا كانت عناية "أحمد حسن بسج" بإعادة تحقيقه وتخريج آياته وأحاديثه، ونسبت الأقوال والأشعار فيه إلى قائليها، ثم تعريفه بالشعراء غير المؤمنين.
