إن علم تخريج الحديث من أدق العلوم الحديثية وأصعبها، وهو علم لا يخوض غماره إلا من عرف السنة ودراها، وقرأ الأحاديث ورواها. وهذا العلم، عرّفه المصنف الإمام السخاوي بأنه إخراج المحدث الأحاديث من بطون الأجزاء والمشيخات والكتب ونحوها وسياقها في مرويات نفسه أو بعض شيوخه أو أقر أنه أو نحو ذلك والكلام عليها، وعزوها لمن رواها من أصحاب الكتب والدواوين.
ولقد كثرت كتب التخريج وتعددت حتى تجاوزت كتب السنة، وتعدّت ذلك إلى كتب اللغة، والفقه وأصوله، والعقائد، ونحوها، لما للحديث من أهمية في سائر العلوم. والكتاب الذي بين يدينا هو حلقة من سلسلة كتب التخريج، صنفه الحافظ "محمد بن عبد الرحمن بن محمد السخاوي" على طريقة "القوم" من حيث تبويبه، فقد حشر المصدفية بتكلف واضح في عدة من الأحاديث الأربعين التي أوردها وفيها-كما قال المذهبي-الموضوع والمتكرر! ولأهمية الكتاب عني "علي عبد الحميد" بتقديمه للقارئ محققاً تحقيقاً علمياً مفيداً نافعاً، حيث قام بنسخ المخطوطة، وبمقابلتها بأصلها، وبضبط نصها، كما أورد في هامش الكتاب ما حذفه المصنف من التبويب أو الأسانيد أو المتون من (أربعين السلمي): كتب للرسالة مقدمات هامة ومفيدة منها للتعريف بالرسالة وأخرى لمنهج التحقيق...، صنع فهرسين للرسالة؛ الأول: فهرس أطراف الأحاديث الأربعين على الحروف الهجائية، الثاني: الفهرس التفصيلي.
