المميزات الشخصية للقائد ودرجات تأثير القادة على التاريخ كانت محط جدل منذ الأزل في مختلف الحقول العلمية، ويتعاطى المؤرخون مع درجة تأثير القائد الفرد على المجتمع، وليس مع مفهوم تأثير الاتجاهات الفكرية في تاريخ عهد من العهود أو ما يطلق عليه مصطلح "روح العهد" ويتساءل هؤلاء المؤرخون عما إذا كان القائد قادراُ على كتابة أوضح التاريخ فعلاً، أم أنه مجرد ة"بيرق" في يد الأقداد.
ونجد هذا الجدل قائماً أيضاً في قرينة دراسة سلوكيات الشخصيات السياسية من وجهة النظر النفسانية ويعتقد بعض المحققين أن الملامح النفسانية لزعيم ما تؤثر في العملية السياسية، في حين ينتقد البعض الأخر أية محاولة لرسم الصورة السيكولوجية لقائد. وحسب هؤلاء النقاد يتمتع كل زعيم بشخصية فريدة، وليس هناك من تفسير ممكن للعملة السياسية على أساس الشخصية.
وفي الدراسة الحالية سيتم تحليل سياسات عرفات وأنماط سلوكه بناء على فرضية أن هكذا تحليل سيكون ذا قيمة معتبرة لجهة التنبؤ بالسلوك المستقبلي للزعيم الفلسطيني، ويستخدم التحليل أداتين اثنتين: أداة التحلي النفساني، وأداة التحليل الاستراتيجي.
في التحليل النفساني تم استعراف الأنماط السلوكية لدى عرفات، وتم منها استخلاص الصفات الأصلية لشخصية: المميزات الخاصة البارزة والملامح الوظيفية وأسلوب القيادة علاوة على ذلك عاينت الدراسة الصفات النفسانية الخاصة التي وسمت نشأة القائد الفلسطيني، وحاولت الربط بين هذه الصفات من جهة وبين نماذج سلوكه الحالي من جهة ثانية.
أما في التحليل الإستراتيجي فتم استعراف الأنماط العملانية النموذجية البارزة لدى عرفات على أساس مسارات العمل السابقة التي نهجها والطريقة التي يتبعها في التواصل مع مختلف "الأطراف الفاعلة" على الحلية، وانطلاقاً من هذه التحليلات تقدم الدراسة استنتاجات أساس فيما ستعلق بالكيفية التي يجب أن يتم التعاطي بها مع عرفات من قبل إسرائيل.
