يقدم لنا الكاتب اللبناني "راتب الحوراني" في روايته "الدائرة المربعة" مفهومه لقيم أساسية في الحياة منها السعادة، الحب، الغيرة، الهوية، الثقافة، الحرية، اللغة، الدين. وذلك من خلال صوارات صريحة وشفافة لأبطال الرواية "روبير" و"سميرة" واللذين ينتميان إلى ثقافتين مختلفتين، فبرأيه أن الإنسان الواعي يمكن أن "يحول الاختلاف إلى تكامل وإغناء متبادل، ولم لا؟ فالاختلاف ليس عقبة أمام التطور الثقافي إلا لمن يفلق باب الثقافة أصلاً ويتقوقع على الطبيعة كما هي معطاة، على ما يعتمده حقيقة مطلقة وخصوصية مقدسة، بينما عندما يخرج المرء من تقوقعه يرى أن ذلك لم يكن إلا أوهاماً وأضغاث أحلام، في حين أن الأحلام الكبيرة بالمعنى الإيجابي للكلمة تتفاعل وتغتني باحتكاك بعضها مع بعضها الآخر".
تدور أحداث الرواية في بلد الحرية باريس، حيث تلاقا العاشقان صدفة، كان ذلك في المكتبة الوطنية (58 شارع شيليو) عندما لاحظته ولاحظها وتبادلا الابتسام خلال بضعة أيام ثم التحية الصباحية وصارا يتعمدان الوصول في تمام التاسعة للجلوس في مقعديهما المتقابلين، حيث دعته سميرة إلى فنجان قهوة، وقابلها سرور وارتياح، وكانت هذه الدعوة جاءت لتلبي رغبة داخلية عنده قد أحس بها أكثر من مرة وكان يؤجلها قائلاً لنفسه "لا داعي للعجلة، لنستمتع باللقاء عن بعد، لا أدري إذا ما كانت نفسيتها تتطابق مع تعابير وجهها، ابتسامة لطيفة، عن بعد خير من مشاحنات علاقة حميمة قد تتحول إلى جحيم".
فهل عاشت وتنامت قصة الحب هذه رغم الاختلاف في الهوية والثقافة، نجد التفاصيل في هذه الرواية الشيقة، والغنية بأحداثها وتنوع شخصياتها، وجرأتها في طرح مفاهيم أساسية في الحياة، أحياناً لا نجرؤ على مناقشتها بفعل القيود التي تحكم مجتمعنا العربي، فكانت إطلالة الكاتب على هذه القيم والمعاني ومناقشتها بحرية وبموضوعية، تعبيراً عما يجول داخل سريرة كل إنسان، فعبر عنها الكاتب راتب الحوراني أصدق تعبير.
