"معاناة وانتقام" عنوان يحيل إلى الظلم والثأر، وهذا يعني أن هناك ظالماً ومظلوماً في نفس الوقت. في الحكاية، تقول الروائية "لمياء عارض الزيادي"، من خلال راوٍ عليم، حكاية أسرة سعودية تعيش في رخاء وتتألف من أب وأم وولدين، تضطر الأسرة إلى تبني ورعاية (فاطمة) إبن شقيق الزوج بعد أن قضا والديها بحادث سيارة، فآثر العم رعاية إبنة أخيه.
تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية حتى يكبر الأبناء وتنشأ علاقة عاطفية بين (فاطمة) و (محمد) إبن عمها تنتهي بحملها وسفر (محمد) للدراسة في الخارج، وبعد عودته الميمونة تكون بصحبته زوجته (روزالين) الأمريكية وإبنهما، تنقل (فاطمة) إلى المستشفى بعد صدمة نفسية شديدة، ويطرد الأب إبنه وزوجته الأمريكية من المنزل. بعد شفاء (فاطمة) يقرر الأهل تزويجها من (إبراهيم) الأخ الشقيق لمحمد وتنجب له ثلآثة أبناء، أما (محمد) فينجب ولدان من زوجته الأجنبية. تتوالى الأيام حتى يكبر الأبناء ولا تموت قصة (فاطمة) التي تحاول الثأر من إبنة (محمد) حبيبها السابق بإبنته الصغيرة التي بأتي بها (إبراهيم) إلى دارهم بعد وفاة (محمد) فتتركها في جبل خاوٍ وصحراء موحشة ... وترجع إلى بيتها؟!
أحداث مشوّقة بانتظارنا ومفاجآت عند كل منعطف لا نعرف سرها حتى انتهاء قراءة الرواية ...
