وكتابنا هذا يتناول حقبة معينة من تاريخ العالم الحديث والمعاصر، قد تكون من أهم الحقب في تاريخ البشرية، فهذه الحقبة قد أحدثت تغييرات جذرية على الصعيد العالمي، إن كان من خلال الحرب العلمية الأولى أو الحرب العالمية الثانية، مع العلم أن هذا الكتاب لم يتطرق إلى هاتين الحربين بالشكل المباشر بناحية أو بأخرى إنما شدد أحياناً على أسبابها وعلى النتائج الاجتماعية والسياسية والاقتصادية التي نتجت عنهما. وقد خرج من الحرب العالمية الثانية الاتحاد السوفياتي والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية دولتين عالميتين، وتقلص إلى مدى بعيد دور الإمبراطورية البريطانية وسلطانها وأصبحت ثانوية تدور في فلك الولايات المتحدة الأميركية. بينما وعت الدول الفقيرة والمستعمرة واقعها القومي والاجتماعي، وهي الشعوب التي كان يطلق عليها الغربيون الشعوب المتأخرة، وعت واكتسبت تجربة ومراساً من الحرب، وبدأت ترفع صوتها عالياُ مطالبة بحقها المشروع وبالاستقلال الكامل، وأن يكون لها وصتاً في تدبير شؤون العالم.
