الإمام أبو عبيد القاسم بن سلاّم أحد أئمة المسلمين الكبار في اللغة والفقه والحديث والتفسير، حتى قال فيه الإمام أبو عمرو الدانيّ: (أبو عبيد إمامُ أهلِ دهره في جميع العلوم)، بالإضافة إلى إمامته في التديُّن والصلاح والتمسُّك بالسنّة وإمامته في الأدب والنُّبْل حتى قال العلاّمة ابن قيّم الجوزية فيه: (كان جبلاً نُفخ فيه الروح علماً وجلالةً ونُبْلاً وأدباً).
وهذا الكتاب يترجم لهذا الإمام العَلَم، ويكشف عن إمامته في العلوم مع التعريف بإنتاجه العلمي ورَصْد أثره في المصنّفات في مختلف العلوم التي شارك فيها، كما يتناثر في ثناياه بكثرة - وهذا من ميزته - التنويهُ بفضائله الخُلُقية وآدابه العملية.
