استطاعت مجلة التايم أن تملأ الفراغات في قصة "غورباتشوف" من مصادر متعددة إذ استطاع مراسلو المجلة في الاتحاد السوفييتي من إجراء مقابلات مع الكثيرين من الشخصيات الذين عرفوا أو صادفوا صبي المزرعة "ميخائيل غورباتشوف" في رحلته إلى الكرملين.
وكانت الفكرة قد بدأت بالبحث عن مرشح (لرجل العام لمجلة التايم) وبالنظر لإنجازات "غورباتشوف" الهامة على الصعيدين الداخلي والخارجي في عام 1927 رسى الخيار عليه.. ولكن الذي جعل غورباتشوف بحق رجل العام المميز هو أنه بالرغم من كونه قائداً لإحدى الدولتين العظيمتين لم يكن معروفاً عنه سوى القليل، لذلك كله عمد محررو المجلة إلى البدء في استقصاء سيرته الذاتية موسعين دائرة بحثهم لتشعل كافة المصادر الرسمية والخاصة، جامعين في سيرته معلومات هامة ومجموعة شاملة من الصور الفوتوغرافية الرسمية والعائلية مضمنين إياها في هذا الكتاب الذي يحتوي سيرة غورباتشوف الذاتية مفصلة أصله، وسيرته المهنية المبكرة وحياته الخاصة، شخصيته، إنجازاته. هذه هي المواضيع التي طرحها هذا الكتاب محاولاً الإجابة عليها بإسهاب وعمق ليكون شاهداً على قصة حياة بطل من أبطال الاتحاد السوفياتي.
يروي هذا الكتاب بأسلوب شيق، قصة حياة الرجل، الذي يعيد الآن بناء الاتحاد السوفييتي، منذ نعومة أظفاره، وحتى تسلمه أعلى المناصب.
إنه قصة بطل من أبطال الاتحاد السوفييتي، الذي برز من بين صفوف الحزب الشيوعي، وأصبح من أشهر الزعماء في عصرنا الحالي.
