يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن عبد الرحمن بن مسلم الذي ولد باصبهان ونشأ بالكوفة، وقد نشأ أبي مسلم أديبا، حيث قال رجل عنه: كنت اطلب العلم، فلا أتي موضعا إلا وجدت أبا مسلم قد سبقني إليه، فالفني فدعاني إلى منزله، ودعا بما حضر فأكلت، ثم قال لي: كيف لعبك بالشطرنج؟ فقلت: إني لاعب بها. فدعا بشطرنجه، فتناولت الواد، فوضعته بين يدي فتناولها من يدي وأعطاني البياض، فاشفت شاهه (الملك)على القتل، فداخله أمر عظيم فاغتممت له، ثم قال: العب! فقد فرج الله! فخلص شاهه، أما صفاته فهي عديدة منها: قصير اسمر، جميلا، نقي البشرة، احور العين، عريض الجبهة، حسن اللحية، وافرها، طويل الشعر والظهر، قصير الساق والفخد، خافض الصوت، فصيح اللغة العربية والفارسية، حلو المنطق، راوية للشعر، عالما بالأمور.
