أصل هذا الكتاب أطروحة دكتوراه قُدِّمَتْ لكلية اللغة العربية بجامعة أم القرى (مكة المكرمة)، وكان موضوع البحث هو "إتجاهات الدراسات اللغوية المعاصرة في مصر بين سنتي 1932 و 1985".
وقد جعل المؤلف مُكوَّناً من تمهيد وبابين، في كل منهما فصول، أمَّا في التمهيد فقد رصد البدايات الأولى لنشأة الدراسات اللغوية المعاصرة بمصر، وجعل الباب الأول من خمسة فصول تدور حول "إتجاهات الدرس في المستويات اللغوية المختلفة"، فاشتمل الفصل الأول على المستوى الصوتي وما استُحدث فيه مما يخالف آراء القدماء.
واشتمل الفصل الثاني على رصد للفروق بين القدماء والمحدثين في نطاق الدراسات الصرفية، واختص الفصل الثالث بالمستوى النحوي، وجاء الفصل الرابع من الباب الأول ليتناول المعجم العربي قديماً وحديثاً، ثم يأتي الباب الثاني وموضوعه "إتجاهات الدراسات اللغوية المعاصرة بمصر في جوانب لغوية مختلفة"، وفيه ثلاثة فصول ثلاثة: أول هذه الفصول يتناول الجانب الإجتماعي من إهتمامات البحث اللغوي من حيث الإزدواج اللغوي.
وفي الفصل الثاني يأتي الكلام عن الجانب النفسي، ثم يأتي الفصل الثالث والأخير من هذا الباب فيتناول جهود المعاصرين في جانب المقارنة اللغوية، سواء من حيث مصطلحات علمي اللغة المقارن والتقابلي، ثم تاريخ الدراسات المقارنة السامية، ثم إتجاهات الدراسة المقارنة بمصر، وأخيراً أهمية الدراسة المقارنة للغة العربية، ويأتي الخاتمة أخيراً تتلوها قوائم بالمصادر والمراجع، ثم فهرس محتويات البحث.
