لما كان علم التصوف من أفضل العلوم التي غايتها التقرب إلى الله تعالى صنف بن مامين هذا الكتاب في هذا العلم الذي في صلاح القلوب، وبه تهذيبها من العيوب، وبه انكشاف الحجب عنها لمشاهدة الغيوب، وغاية المصنف من هذا الكتاب تحديد الشروط التي لا بد منها لطالبه لأنه لا يستغني عنها في بدايته ونهايته.
وقد بين فيه وصفاً للمريد وشيخة المربية، وما يجب على كل منهما فيما يليه، وقسمه إلى قسمين وجاء كل قسم في أربعة أبواب. القسم الأول (أو الكتاب الأول كما سماه) في نعت البدايات، وما يصلح لأهلها إلى النهايات. الباب الأول: آداب المريد مع شيخه. الثاني: في آدابه مع عبادة ربه. والثالث: في آدابه مع إخوانه، والرابع: فيما من الأقوال والأفعال ما ينتفع به.
والقسم الثاني (أو الكتاب الثاني كما سماه) في توصيف النهايات، وما يصلح لأهلها إلى الممات، بابه الأول: في آداب المربي مع ربه، والثاني: في آداه مع تلامذته، والثالث: في آدابه مع غيرهم من الخلق أجمعه، والرابع: فيما من الأقوال والأفعال ينتفع به.
