تحاول الباحثة من خلال هذا الكتاب إلقاء الضوء على عمق المأساة التي تعيشها فئة من النساء المغربيات الشابات في أغلب الأحيان اللائي يمارسن البغاء، ولا يمكن إدراك عمق تلك المأساة إلا من خلال الاستماع إليهن وهن يحكين عن مسار أوقعهن في شرك عالم لا يرحم، لذا كان لا بد لها من إجراء مقابلات مع نماذج متعددة منهن.
إن الباحثة لم تقدم في هذا البحث جرداً شاملاً لظاهرة البغاء في المغرب، وأيضاً لم تعتمد إحصائيات شاملة ودقيقة تؤهله لذلك، إلا أنها قاربت الظاهرة وألقت الضوء على عواملها ومترتباتها في نفس الآن. لقد اعتمدت على استجوابات تتراوح بين (20د وساعتين)، مع حوالي 60 امرأة تمارس البغاء في الدار البيضاء، تتراوح أعمارهن بين 18 و38 سنة ولكن أغلبهن يدخل في إطار الفئة العمرية (20-27 سنة).
وقد سجلت الباحثة هذه الأحاديث على فترات متباعدة بين سنوات 1985 و1998، وارتكازاً على هذه الاحاديث كان هذا البحث، الذي حاولت فيه الباحثة ومن خلاله دراسة العوامل الباعثة بالنساء على ارتياد البغاء بكل مستوياتها، والأطراف المكونة لبنية وطبيعة هذه البيئة، قبل استعراضها مجموعة من الشهادات التي لا تلقي الضوء على هذه الظاهرة فحسب، ولكنها تكشف في نفس الوقت عن المعاناة الكامنة في عمق المرأة التي تمارس البغاء.
"أول مرة خرجت فيها مع أحدهم، أعطاني 200 درهم، أتدرين ما فعلت؟ أخذت ولاّعة وأشعلت فيها النار وتركتها تحترق في منفضة السجائر ومكثت أنظر إليها هنيهة ثم استدرت وخرجت دون أو أودّعه... بما أحسست؟ لا أدري! كنت غاضبة ومحتاجة إلى أن أصرخ بأنّني بعت نفسي لأوّل مرة في حياتي... إنّه شعور فظيع لن أنساه طيلة الحياة".
