كانت السياسة الخارجية للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية على الدوام موضع البحث من ناحية تسلسل الأحداث التاريخية، وقل أن عولجت من الناحية الموضوعية وعلى ضوء ما وصلت أليه المدارس الفكرية الواسعة النطاق في النظرية السياسية، وسنحاول في هذا الكتاب أتباع الطريقة الأخيرة في معالجة هذا الموضوع . أن تحديد فترة الدراسة ببداية الحرب العالمية الثانية حتى عام 1960م، ناجم من كون الحرب قد شكلت منعطفاً هاماً في مسار السياسة الخارجية للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، وتبرز ملامح ذلك التغير من خلال وصول القوة الأمريكية العسكرية والصناعية التجارية والمالية إلى ذروتها ولم يعد الجزء الغربي من الكرة الأرضية حسب مبدأ مونرو كافياً لاستيعاب النشاط الأمريكي، أما الثاني فقد تمثل بانهيار القوى الديمقراطية حليفة أمريكا وميدان استثماراتها الرئيسية
