الحجامة أو كاسات الهواء كما يعرفها البعض وسيلة قديمة يرجع تاريخها إلى عصور سحيقة، فالمصريون القدماء كما تخبرنا السجلات التاريخية كانوا أول من استخدام طريقة فصد الدم لتنظيف الدم واستخدموا الإبر والكؤوس لهذا الغرض وقد ذكرها أبوقراط وعرفت في إيطاليا حيث كانت هذه العملية شائعة خلال أيام الأحد.
وفي القرن الخامس عشر أصبحت هذه العملية في أوروبا أكثر وسائل إزالة الفضلات السمينة من الجسم شيوعاً. وظلت سائدة حتى القرن التاسع عشر. وفي عهد الرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم انتشر استخدام الحجامة ولقد تداوى صلى الله عليه وسلم بالحجامة كثيراً وفي أماكن متعددة على أعضاء جسده الشريف لاستطبابات وأحوال شتى.
والحجامة هي المص أي الشفط وهو سحب السوائل من مكانها. والحجامة فعل الحجام وحرفته والمحجم يطلق على الآلة التي يجمع فيها الدم. والحجامة على نوعين ولكل نوع استخدام خاص لاستطبابات خاصة: الحجامة الجافة والحجامة الرطبة أو الدامية.
وفي هذا الكتاب يقدم أحد المتخصصين في هذا المجال، عرضاً وافياً لعلم الحجامة الحديثة ولفوائد الحجامة وأنواعها ومواضعها والأمراض وأماكن علاجها حيث رتب الأمراض حسب بساطتها وسهولتها على الحجام موضحة بالرسوم المفصلة والمبينة لموضع الحجم في جسم الإنسان.
