درس كثير، من الباحثين والمؤرخين تاريخ الخليج العربي عامة، وتاريخ دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة خاصة، لكنهم لم يتناولوا بالبحث والدراسة تاريخ تكوين إماراته دراسة أكاديمية، ولا سيما الإمارات الفقيرة منها، مثل رأس الخيمة، مقارنة بأبو ظبي أو دبي، فكان هذا حافزاً لإختياري هذا الموضوع.
اهتم هذا الكتاب ببحث تاريخ إمارة رأس الخيمة للفترة ما بين 1820- 1948م، وهي المرحلة التي شهدت تكوين هذه الإمارة، بعد إنفصالها عن الشارقة، وإستقلالها عنها، وصولاً إلى الإعتراف الرسمي البريطاني بهذا الإستقلال.
وعنيت هذه الدراسة بحكام رأس الخيمة من القواسم، ودورهم في تأسيس هذه الإمارة، وكيفية ظهورها ثانية على مسرح الأحداث السياسية، كما عنيت بعلاقاتها بالقوى العربية والأجنبية.
وقع الإختيار على عام 1820م ليكون البداية لأنه العام الذي وقّع فيه شيوخ ساحل عُمان إتفاقية السلام الشاملة، أما عام 1948م فهو نهاية الموضوع، لأنه العام الذي انتهى فيه حكم الشيخ سلطان بن سالم، على إثر الإنقلاب الذي قاده الشيخ خالد بن صقر القاسمي.
