اسمه الكامل جورج آمادو دي فاريا (Jorge Amado de Faria) (ولد في باهيا 10 أغسطس 1912, توفي 6 أغسطس 2001) روائي، صحفي وسياسي برازيلي، واحد من أهم كتّاب البرازيل ومن أوسعهم شهرة. منذ أيام المدرسة بدأ الكتابة، وألف مع عدد من أصدقائه في مسقط رأسه «جماعة الحداثة». وفي عام 1935 أنهى دراسة الحقوق في ريو دي جانيرو ولكنه لم يتسلم شهادته إذ كان قد دخل حينذاك عالم الأدب وبدأ يشق طريق النجاح بمجموعة من المؤلفات، منها «بلاد الكرنفال» (1931) O pais do carnaval، و«كاكاو» (1933) Cacao، و«عَرَق» (1934) Suor و«جوبيابا» (1935) Jubiaba، ثم أتبعها بـ «بحر ميت» (1936) Mar Morto و«قباطنة الرمال» (1937)Capitaes Areia. وقد صار جورجي آمادو بعد انتشار أعماله هذه الكاتب المفضل لدى شعبه. والسر في هذا النجاح هو تمسكه ببعض الأشكال الاتباعية ممزوجة بالصعلكة وطعم التقاليد العريقة في مسقط رأسه، ولاية باهيا، التي كانت بحواضرها وريفها مسرح كل رواياته، وأناسها أبطاله الدائمين.

لعل جورج أمادو في هذه الرواية يريد أن يقول إن الحياة لا طعم لها بالواقع وحده، لا بد من فسحة للحلم، الحقيقة العارية التي نسعى إليها هي حقيقة باردة ميتة. والحياة التي لها طعم هي تلك المطعمة بشيء من الخيال وشيء من حلم اليقظة، بشيء من الكذب الأبيض الذي لا يؤذي.
وبراعة أمادو في هذا المجال هي التي تجعلك تشك وأنت تقرأ وتستمع: أين هي الحقيقة؟
ولأن المسألة على هذا النحو، فإنك وأنت تتقدم في قراءة الرواية تبدأ بالشك في أن القبطان يكذب. ولكنك تتعاطف معه، وتتمنى أن لا ينكشف كذبه، أن يستمر هذا الحلم الجميل الذي يجمل الحياة: حياتنا وحياة أهل القرية وحياة القبطان ذاته.
ويبلغ التعاطف حداً يجعلك تقف على حافة مأساة حقيقة حين يتهدد القبطان بالفضيحة. كيف ستكون النتيجة عليه هو وعلى أهل القرية الذين جمل حياتهم؟
"أين هي الحقيقة؟ قولوا لي، أرجوكم: في الواقع الصغير لكل منا؟ أم في الحلم الإنساني الكبير؟".
على الرغم من أن جورج أمادو يبدأ، وينهي، روايته "عودة البحار" بهذه العبارات إلا أنه يريد، منذ البداية أن يسخر منا، أو أن يورطنا في هذه الجدية الموحى بها من خلال هذا الكلام الذي يريد أن يبدو فلسفياً.
