يستند الإعلام الديني إلى قاعدتين: الأولى عملية تجعله جزءاً لا يتجزأ من علم الإعلام بمعناه الواسع متعدد الإختصاصات والحقول والذي يستثمر الوسائل التكنولوجية المختلفة، وأدوات البحث والتقصي التي تستخدمها تلك الحقول وتشترك في إستخدامها مع علوم الإنسان والمجتمع؛ وثانيهما معرفية، تتمثل في العقائد الدينية التي يعدها مرجعية ينطلق منها في صياغة مضامين رسالته إلى المتلقين.
وهذا يعني إن للإعلام الديني طابع العمومية كحقل من حقول علم الإعلام، وطابع الخصوصية من حيث المضمون والوظيفة.
يكتسب الإعلام الديني في عصرنا الراهن أهمية إستثنائية وخصوصاً بعد أن تداخلت العقائد الدينية، سماوية وأرضية فازدادت المفاهيم غموضاً والأفكار عرضة للشكوك، بل إن تلك العقائد، استغلت كأسلحة في معارك الدعاية السياسية والنزاعات دون إعتبار لقدسيتها وخطورتها.
حيث قسمّت هذه الدراسة إلى ثمانية فصول توزعت على الشكل التالي: الفصل الأول: "المفاهيم والإصطلاحات"، الفصل الثاني: "وسائل وصفات الإعلام الديني"، الفصل الثالث: "مواصفات الإعلامي الديني"، الفصل الرابع: "مصادر الإعلام الديني"، الفصل الخامس: "وظائف الإعلام الديني"، الفصل السادس: "كتابة الموضوعات للإعلام الديني"، الفصل السابع: "الحملات الإعلامية الدينية"، الفصل الثامن: "الإعلام الإلكتروني والدين".
