تعتبر حضارات العصر الحديث امتداد للحضارات السابقة التي شهدها العالم وازدهرت في ما مضى من زمن, وفي الشرق الأدنى القديم نشأت بعض الحضارات، في مصر وبلاد النهرين في المجتمعات الزراعية الكبرى إذ أن كل إنتاج إنما يبدأ من أجل الكفاح في سبيل العيش أو ثم من أجل الرغبة في الرفاهية ثانياً.
وفي هذا الكتاب الذي وضعه المؤلف لدراسة حضارات الشرق الأدنى القديم حيث يمهد لذلك بتمهيد يتحدث فيه عن الحضارة ونشأتها ومظاهرها، لتطرق في المبحث الأول لحضارة مصر ونشأتها ويدرس مظاهر الحضارة المصرية المختلفة، فيتناول الأسرة التي تحتل المكانة الأولى في دراسة أي مجتمع من المجتمعات وتمثل الحياة اليومية لأفرادها مظاهر الحضارة المختلفة ثم يعرض للحلل، والمسكن والملابس والزينة، والإدارة والديانة والقضاء والعسكرية والحياة الاقتصادية العلوم والآداب والفنون.
أما المبحث الثاني فهو مخصص لبلاد العرب التي ظلت بيئة مقفلة أمام العالم المتحضر فلم تقم بها بحوث أثرية كافية لحد الآن. ويعرض في المبحث الثالث للحضارات التي نشأت في الإقليم السوري، ويتطرق للأمويين والكنعانيين والفينيقيين والآراميين والعبرانيين. ويتطرق في المبحث الرابع لتاريخ آسيا الصغرى حيث يبين أن موكب الحضارة في آسيا الصغرى لا يمثل سلسلة متكاملة وإن هذه الحضارة لم تندرج في تطورها منذ أقدم العصور دون أن تنتابها تأثيرات مفاجئة.
وفي المبحث الخامس يعرض المؤلف لتاريخ بلاد النهرين وهي حضارة تمثل حضارة بيئة استمت بالعنف في مظاهرها الطبيعية وق اثر ذلك في كل إنتاجها الحضاري. أما المبحث السادس والأخير فقد تطرق فيه المؤلف إلى إيران حيث أدى ظهور الشعوب في هضبة إيران واندماجها مع سكانها الأصليين إلى ظهور نهضة حضارية عظيمة.
