صاحب الديوان هو طهمان بن عمرو بن سلمة بن سكن بن قريط بن كلاب. وعمرو هذا كان من الصحابة. سكن المدينة، وله فيها شعر. فلقد جاء على ذكره ابن حجر في الإصابة. كان طهمان من لصوص العرب وفتكا لهم، عاش في العصر الأموي، وله قصص مع آل مروان،مدح منهم عبد الملك، مات في خلافة عبد الملك بن مروان. ويمكن القول بأن طهمان كان شاعرا فارسا شارك في بعض الأيام، حمل شخصية قوية قاسية مهابة، حتى أنه عندما يسرق، يسرق بدون خشية أو خوف وحين يطلب، يطلب بذكاء، وحين يهدد، ينفذ تهديده، حتى لو كان في أقرب الناس إليه. وطهمان كشاعر لم يأخذ حقه من الدراسة التاريخية والشعرية، فشعره على قلته يزخر بالألوان والأغراض الشعرية القديمة، من نزل ونسيب، ومدح، وهجاء، وفخر… الخ وهذا ما سيلمحه القارئ من خلال قراءته لديوان طهمان في هذا الكتاب. وقد سبق الديوان دراسة المحقق لشعر اللصوص عامة، وطهمان خاصة، وتم تقسيم البحث إلى قسمين: القسم الأول: وتضمن ثلاثة فصول، تمت في الأول دراسة ظاهرة اللصوصية في العصر الإسلامي، وفي الفصل الثاني تم استعراض ظواهر شعر اللصوص مع الشواهد اللازمة أما في الفصل الثالث فقد درس فيه المحقق شعر اللصوص، الخصائص المعنوية، والخصائص الفنية، مع دراسة قصيدتين لطهمان كنموذج. أما القسم الثاني فكان الديوان حيث عمد المحقق إلى التعريف بالعالم السكري صاحب الكتاب، ثم الشاعر طهمان، نسبه وحياته، وأهم الحوادث التي عاصرها. بعدها تم تحقيق الديوان حيث جمع ذيلاً للديوان وضع فيه الشعر الذي نسب لطهمان في البطون والمصادر القديمة ولم يرد في مخطوطة الأصل.
