في هذه المناخات تدور أحداث رواية "رأفة بالنساء" حيث يؤكد الكاتب لقرائه من أنه أراد عمداً أن يكون بطله "كوستال" شخصية مريبة تبعث القلق في النفس، وكريهة تثير الاشمئزاز، وليس من الإنصاف أن تعزى آراء هذه الشخصية وأعمالها إلى المؤلف الذي ابتكرها. والرواية هي الثانية في سلسلة عنوانها "ماريان" أو "الصبايا". وتعد هذه السلسلة واحدة من روائع الأدب والفكر العالمي، المنقولة إلى العربية.
