في روايتها "مذكرات متسوّلة" يرصد سامي حسين الطلاق حياة امرأة تنتمي إلى القاع الإجتماعي، فــ "عفاف" التي رحل عنها زوجها "جاسم" بعد سنين لا تتعدى أصابع اليد وترك بعد رحيله المفاجئ طفلاً برقبتها، لم تعرف كيف تتعامل مع تيمه، وأخ قاسٍ جداً، تحملت معاملته الفظة لها كثيراً، والسبب زواجها من رجل كانت له تجربة بالسجن لتعاطي وترويج المخدرات، أما صديقتها "بتول" فوضعتها خارج التصنيف، هي شقيقتها التي لم تنجبها أمها، كانت نصفها الثاني وكأنهما ورقةُ عملةٍ واحدة من وجهين.
هذه الظروف مجتمعة، جعلت من عفاف مستوّلة، حدث هذا بعد أن راقبت مشهد امرأة متسوّلة بتبيع الممنوعات، وتكسب أموالاً طائلة، ولأن كل الأعمال متعبة قررت عفاف إمتهان التسوّل" صابرة على عيون الناس التي ترمقها وشعارها "ما لِجرح بميتٍ إيلام" كانت نظرات الجميع تحاسبها أما هي فما بوسعها سوى لملمة جراحها.
وهكذا أصبحت حياة عفاف في مشهدها الإعتيادي شابة فقدت زوجها مبكراً وأم لطفل وتعيش من راتب زوجها، ومبرر عيشها لوحدها هو عدم تحمل أهلها نفقاتها، فأصبحت ذات شخصيتين، بين شخصية عفاف المتسولة بل البارعة بالتسول، القادمة من خلفية محافظة متدينة نوعاً ما، والمجتهدة دراسياً - حيث تابعت تعليمها - متمسكة بخيط رفيع من الأمل والكفاح ولو بالتسول... تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية حتى تقرر كتابة مذكراتها "مذكرات متسوّلة".
