لقد أثبتت دراسة مائة عام لتاريخ الشرق القديم أن الصورة التي, رسمها الخيال البشري عبر آلاف السنين وحدد أبعادها ولونها بألوان مختلفة هي صورة قريبة من واقع الأشياء. لقد ظهرت الزراعة في آسيا الأمامية لأول مرة في العالم, وفيها ظهرت تربية الحيوان أيضاً, وتشكلت فيها القرية والمدينة, وظهر العلم والأدب ونشأت منابع الحضارة والتراث الأوروبيين, وقد استهوى رصدها علماء الآثار ودفعهم الى صحاريها ووديانها. وشاركتها آسيا الوسطى ذاك الاهتمام. لكن هذا كله يجب ألا يحملنا على الاعتقاد أن آسيا الأمامية كانت تضم جنة الخلد. يحاول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب الوصول الى الأهداف التي وصل إليها علماء الأثنوغرافيا من قبله ولهذا قام بدراسة حقبة مديدة من التاريخ لم تكن دراستها ممكنة في السابق. وهي الحقبة التي ظهرت فيها المقدمات الأولية لظهور المجتمع الطبقي من زراعة وتربية حيوان. أي منذ نهاية العصر الجليدي الى ظهور الأشكال الأولى للدولة في وديان أنهار آسيا الأمامية. والمقصود هنا الثورة الزراعية.
