لعل من أطرف الكتب التي تسترعي انتباه القراء ما خص منها أو بعضها في الحديث عن المرأة، فهي الطرف الناعم من هذا الجنس البشري، وهي الأنس الذي وهبه الله تعالى للرجل، وهي السر الواضح، والجلي الخفي في هذا الكون!
وقد أدرك المؤلفون جاذبية هذا السر، وأهمية ذكر المرأة في كتبهم. فنراهم قد زينوا كتبهم بنوادر وأطراف من المعلومات والأخبار، عدواً الحديث فيها محطة ارتياح فكري، وموطن بسمة متوقعة لكل قارئ، فلا نكاد نجد كتاباً جمع أطرافاً من الطرائف، وباقات من الأخبار إلا وخص جزء من عمله للحديث عن جانب شائق من جوانبها، مثل كتاب "محاضرات الأدباء" للراغب الأصبهاني، و"الأغاني" لأبي الفرج، و"المخصص" لابن سيده، و"عيون الأخبار" لابن قتيبة...
ومما لا شك فيه أن الأدباء الذين خصوا كتبهم، أو طعموها تطعيماً، بهذه المادة الخصبة أذكياء في انتقاء موضوعاتهم. ونعد مؤلفنا ابن البتنوني أكثرهم حنكة وألمعية وذكاء، إذ قدم لنا كتاباً ضم بين دفتيه عشرات من القصص الطريفة التي حاول أني يثبت فيها دهاء المرأة وكيدها، والوسائل التي اتبعتها لإيقاع الرجل بأحبلها، أو للوصول به إلى غايتها، مهما كانت.
ولعل المؤلف وقع في مكيدة إحدى السيدات، وانجراف بتيار خبثها. وهو حين صحا من وقعته -إن صحا- أحب أن يرد على كيدها به بفضح ألاعيبها من وراء قصص وحكايات انتقاها من التاريخ، ومن إشارات ورد ذكرها في القرآن الكريم، والسنة الشريفة، والسيرة النبوية، والكتب المسيحية والإسرائيلية... وكثير من هذه القصص مطعم بالخيال، وإن كان الواقع صريحاً في بعضها الآخر.
فالكتاب مجموعة أقاصيص دينية، أو تاريخية، أو مطعمة منهما، أو ذات طابع خيالي وعظي، وهو في ذلك كله لم يكتب شيئاً من عنده. وغاية ما فعله أنه جمع الروايات والنقول، واختصرها وهذبها، واستشهد عليها من مخزون معرفته بذكاء نادر وعرض جالب.
