أصدر كنت غراهم في العام 1895 كتاب "العصر الذهبي" الذي تناول فيه حياة الأطفال في الريف الإنكليزي، والذي لاقى نجاحاً عز نظيره ثم أصدر في العام 1898، تكمله لعمله ذاك في كتاب عنوانه أيام الحلم أما كتابة "الريح والصفصاف" فقد أصدره في العام 1908 وأراده كتاباً للأحداث من الناس. ولاقى الكتاب فعلاً، شعبية واسعة بين الأحداث لكنه تجاوزهم أيضاً إلى الراشدين الذين أقبلوا عليه إقبالا شديداً.
وقد رأى الناس في هذا المؤلف كتاباً بالغ التشويق يصور طبائع النفس البشرية وألوان الصراع الذي تواجهه والرغبات التي تتنازعها كما يصدر شيئاً من حياة الحيوان ويصف جمال الحياة مع الطبيعة، جعل المؤلف أبطاله من الحيوانات، لكنها حيوانات تمثل في حقيقة الأمر، صفات البشر وتتصرف تصرفهم لذا تخاطب الشخصيات في الكتاب مخاطبة العاقل زيادة في إعطاء التأثير المقصود من أحداث القصة، إلا عندما تذكر لفظة "حيوانات" نصاً، فتخاطب عندئذٍ حرصاً على طبيعة الأسلوب العربى ومخاطبة غير العاقل.
